The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a(n) Associate Research Fellow (ARF), or Research Fellow (RF) for a two-year, renewable appointment in the Poverty, Health and Nutrition Division (PHND). The selected candidate will contribute to/lead the development and implementation of the research agenda on capacity sharing activities for the One CGIAR Initiative called Fruits and Vegetables for Sustainable Healthy Diets (FRESH). This Initiative uses an end-to-end approach (consumption, production, food environments) in low-and-middle-income countries to improving intake of fruits and vegetables, reducing poverty, addressing environmental constraints and equity-related issues among others. Effective capacity sharing activities and related research are integral to the success of this Initiative. Description of the essential duties are described below. In addition to the essential duties, the candidate may also work on other related research projects, as needed. The position reports to the Director of the Poverty, Health and Nutrition Division at IFPRI Washington.
This position can be based at the IFPRI headquarters in Washington, DC or in Sri Lanka or Tanzania and will require international travel.
Please note that ARF appointments at IFPRI have a maximum term of three (3) years, inclusive of any approved appointment extensions. After the maximum appointment term, ARFs may be considered for a promotion to the next level.
The final grade level (ARF or RF) for this position will be determined by demonstrated experience and track record of publications.
Identifies, maps and describes capacity strengthening needs of key stakeholders in areas relevant for FRESH
Develops and implements a global strategy for strengthening the capacity of key stakeholders to support the prioritization of fruits and vegetables in sub-national, national and regional laws, regulations and policies with the aim of improving diet quality and increasing incomes within planetary boundaries
Leads or contributes to the development of capacity strengthening training materials (within Work Package 6 and across the other Work Packages)
Leads or contributes to capacity strengthening workshops (within Work Package 6 and across the other Work Packages)
Designs and conducts research to understand the effectiveness of different types of capacity sharing approaches for increasing knowledge, attitudes and practices and in influencing investments and policies
Together with country coordinators and other FRESH team members, support the organization and oversight of program stakeholder groups(as needed) and develop strategies for building out and sharing information through appropriate networks.
Conduct empirical data analysis; prepare technical/donor reports, journal articles, and dissemination materials including blogs and project/policy notes.
Collaborate in writing research proposals to complement existing funds for the research program.
Manage research reporting requirements to funding agencies and to the One CGIAR.
Disseminate research findings to governments, donors, the academic community, and other stakeholders at national, regional, and international levels.
Publish research findings in high impact peer-reviewed journals.
Maintain and coordinate excellent relationships with research program donors and partners.
PhD in Social Science, Public Policy, Agriculture, Nutrition, International Relations, Economics, Education or Public Health Expertise in capacity strengthening, adult education, policy influence and interdisciplinary research, ideally with experience in at least two of the following: agriculture development, food environments, diets, or the fruit and vegetable sector
Proficiency in either quantitative or qualitative research methods with a preference for expertise in the use of mixed methods approaches
Experience or training in capacity strengthening or sharing methods
Prior research on topics related to capacity sharing
Experience working in multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary teams
Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals
Ability and experience in managing internal and external relationships with project teams, donors, and collaborators
Capability and interest in capacity strengthening and policy dialogue with international agencies, NGOs and donors
3+ years of post-PhD experience relevant to the job and demonstrated fundraising experience
Excellent publication record in peer-reviewed journals
Demonstrated leadership skills and experience building and managing teams
Experience with specific issues related to fruit and vegetable value chains and/or issues related to low intake of fruits and vegetables
Familiarity with food systems related research and analysis in LMICs
Understanding of multi-sectoral program and policy design and implementation, and experience working and engaging with program implementers and policy makers
Experience working with researchers from other social and biological sciences
Proficiency or fluency in one or more languages of current focal countries (Benin, Tanzania, Sri Lanka and the Philippines)
