Terms of Reference (ToR) for interns to provide research support for
Agricultural Transformation and Market Integration in ASEAN countries
and Agricultural Trade and partnership in BIMSTEC region project
The Agricultural Transformation and Market Integration in ASEAN countries project was launched in 2016 and will be completed in 2022. Agricultural Market Integration and Partnership project started in 2021. The ATMI ASEAN looks at the issues of transformation and market integration from the perspective of inclusiveness and smallholders’ participation in regional and global value chains. The project in BIMSTEC region looks at the holistic cooperation and partnerships among BIMSTEC countries.
IFPRI is looking to hire an intern for a period not exceeding 2 months to provide research support for the ATMI ASEAN and BIMSTEC project
in a broad range of areas, including literature review, data management, data and statistical analysis, and communication and dissemination.
Under the guidance of two senior research staff members, the intern will join the IFPRI South Asia Regional Office. The internship provides the opportunity to develop the following skills within the context of an international research and development organization:
Knowledge on issues around agriculture and food trade and interlinkages with environmental and development goals
Data analytical skills using large secondary data at high levels of commodity disaggregation
Learn about trade and agriculture development policy processes and issues , with a focus on regional and supra regional collaboration and partnerships, roles of formal and informal trade in agricultural and food products
Responsibilities for the intern would include tasks listed below, but not limited to:
Identify and review relevant literature in food and agriculture trade within the region and beyond from journals and other online sources
Collect and analyze secondary data on trade in food and agriculture
Organize, clean, and analyze data from other secondary sources to support senior research staff in their research design and analysis.
Assist with development of research instruments and analytical tools; and develop associated model documentation and manuals
Conduct research as advised, gather data (tables, charts) for grant proposals, infographics, and other materials.
Undergraduate or post-graduate degree, or equivalent combination of undergraduate degree and relevant experience
Basic understanding of rural livelihood and agriculture related issues
Strong writing and research skills, as well as basic analytical (quantitative and qualitative) skills
Demonstrated ability to work with statistical analysis software
Good communication skills with the ability and willingness to write and present complex material in a compelling and engaging way
Experience of working effectively to demanding deadlines
Flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to multitask, focus, and work effectively.
Ability to work collaboratively and independently while establishing strong working relationships and taking direction from one or more senior research staff
Would require sitting in an upright position for a long period of time
Would be required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing computer terminal; extensive reading.
