YY Regen: On-Demand Renewable Energy

Jun 19 2023

In January 2022, YY Regen created ReGen-R8 which is Lebanon’s first on-demand renewable energy product service. The system breaks common misconceptions about renewable power for being complicated, unreliable, and expensive by creating a solution that is local, simple, reliable, affordable, and adapted to the specific needs of Lebanese agriculture.

With the ReGen-R8 platform, a solar system functioning within a 20 ft shipping container, the company is providing frictionless access to power on demand – when and where it is needed.

Controlled by an easy-to-use web application the ReGen-R8 system estimates the renewable energy potential of a customer’s plot of land and recommends potential power modules in a commensurate manner. The power modules are available on rental, subscription, or metered power output revenue models contained in standard shipping containers and can be deployed quickly to the point of use as a drop-in replacement to a conventional diesel generator.

YY Regen’s proposed project under the Food System Challenge is to scale up its business through the production of the company’s recently developed off-grid solar power system. The system development is an answer to the main pain points the founders have discerned in Lebanon and exacerbated in the past year with severe shortages in water and power.

YY Regen focuses on three sectors within the food-energy-water nexus. The first is providing accessible renewable energy solutions through developing, deploying, and servicing transformative applications across the renewable energy spectrum inclusive of solar energy, wind energy, geothermal, and biomass. The second is contributing to restoring water access in a water-challenged region. Finally, the third is promoting sustainable and profitable agriculture by blending cutting-edge technology with centuries-old traditional farming techniques to amplify output. YY Regen will revive neglected orchards using regenerative farming techniques, create vertical farms for the hyperlocal production of food and monitor, map, and manage using the latest in distributed sensing & IOT technologies to better manage resources and production.

The system provided by the company is available on subscription or rental. The practicality of the solution lies in its modularity and therefore simplifying the shift of the system from one plot of land to another. Scalability, accessibility, modularity, affordability, and reliability are the key differentiators of Regen-R8.

The Food System Challenge program will help to scale up the operations of YY Regen whereby the company will be able to produce 5 more units of their innovated system Regen-R8.

The Food System Challenge is implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP) and Berytech through support from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The program’s main outcomes are enhanced food security, a well-functioning local food system, enhanced efficiency and resilience of cooperatives and SMEs working across different streams of the food systems, and increased employment opportunities, especially for women and vulnerable individuals.
